Fort Knox State Park

No, this is not the one with the gold stored inside. This is the first Fort Knox, located in Prospect, Maine, and was built in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River valley against a possible future British naval incursion. Back when we used to worry about such things.

The fort's newest neighbor and architectural marvel is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, featured in another gallery on this site. As dank and creepy as Fort Knox is, I just love going back over and over again. I can lose myself for hours just exploring the textures and stark light.

Dance of Light

These images are from a series I began, quite by accident, on Christmas Day 2009. A passing glance at my Christmas tree lights through a drinking glass revealed a dance of light that charged my imagination. The refractions reminded me of everything from icicles and fireworks to parachutes and schools of fish. Captivated, I made hundreds of images over the next few days, capturing as much variety as I could before the Christmas tree had to find its new home on the curb. In the editing phase the images continue to surprise me with their intricate geometry, suggesting human and animal forms and movements.

Two of the images, Migration and Schooling, were part of the "Bangor, Brush with History" exhibit celebrating Bangor, Maine's 175th anniversary.

Vance Guitars

Vance Peters handcrafts koa wood guitars and ukuleles in the wood working shop he set up over his tropical fish emporium in Bucksport, Maine. It's a perfect set-up: multiple huge fish tanks act as humidors, keeping the workshop atmosphere perfect for Vance's tonewoods all through the long, dry Maine winters.

A 30+ year veteran wood worker and finisher, Vance got hooked on Hawaiian slack-key guitar music during a family trip to the islands. He taught himself the hypnotic ki ho'alu style and decided to build his own instruments as well.

When I first visited Vance's shop, he was in the middle of building three guitars and three ukuleles in preparation for the 2009 American Folk Festival in Bangor, Maine. In addition to the six new instruments, I was able to shoot one of his older instruments: a glorious twelve-string that he proudly displays among the palms in his pet shop.

Asticou Gardens

The Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor, Maine delights the eyes and soothes the soul. Heavily influenced by Japanese garden design, it features winding paths, reflecting pools, and multiple garden "rooms" brimming with lush plantings. There's even a small Zen sand garden.

Well worth a visit in any season, Asticou is particularly amazing in late May and early June when it is graced by the full azalea bloom.

Moving Fire

I was at a summer gathering in Vermont a few years ago when a friend of the hosts brought out some flammable liquids and a set of balls on a long bead chain. This was my first experience watching and photographing fire spinning, or fire poi as it is properly known.

Monhegan Island

If there is a perfect place in Maine, it is Monhegan. Ten miles from the mainland. Accessible only by the mail ferry. No cars or paved roads. No cell service. Ahhh!

As the visitor's guide says, "For more than 100 years, Monhegan has been a summer haven for artists and other visitors who appreciate its isolation, the beauty of its wilderness areas, its quiet relaxed atmosphere, and its unhurried pace." Get there if you can!

Penobscot Narrows Bridge

I can say with 99% certainty that the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, a cable-stay structure spanning 1,161' and housing an observatory at 400' elevation, will be the most amazing structure built in Maine during my lifetime. Maine Kantele Institute

The kantele is a traditional Finnish lap-harp with a 2000-year history; it stands as one of the most important symbols in Finnish culture. This gallery comprises a sampling of images shot at the 2008 Maine Kantele Institute held in Lisbon Falls, Maine and sponsored by Kantele Laulu.The 2008 institute featured workshops on playing the traditional music of Finland as well as a builders' workshop, guided by Erkki Okkonen and designed to take participants from raw wood to playable instrument.

Master luthier Dana Bourgeios has been building guitars for more than 35 years and this fall (2009) will mark the completion of the 5,000th Bourgeois guitar. I visited his workshop, part of a converted mill building in Lewiston, Maine, during the summer of 2007. The shop combines state-of-the-art CNC technology and skilled handcraft to produce guitars that I have heard folks say "play themselves." Dana and his entire crew are friendly, welcoming, and eager to talk about the work they love and do so well.

Dana is truly a world-class builder, right here in the heart of Maine.
