These galleries feature images from my ongoing project documenting the handcraft of Maine's luthiers (string instrument builders).
Rather than using a straight documentary treatment, the images in the project explore instruments almost as pieces of sculpture. I've come to look at instruments as works of art in their own right before they even make a sound. The sinuous lines, the richly toned wood grains, and the delicacy of these hollow wooden shells were the key features that brought me to this project in the first place. Being able to watch and learn from the amazing artisans who build these instruments has been a tremendous reward.
